Growth of apartment living opens doors for new staff

Bristol Evening Post - Friday February 19, 2010

An increase in the number of people living in flats and apartments during the credit crunch has meant strong growth for a Bristol-based company set up to manage apartment blocks on behalf of tenants.

BNS Management Services in Badminton Road, Downend, now manages 120 apartment blocks around the Bristol area and is expanding with the recruitment of two more property managers.

Andrew Simmonds, who set up the business with his brother Ian in 2006, said: "We have seen strong growth in the last few years as people realise that they can appoint local managers to their apartment blocks, rather than deal with the larger agents.

"Lifestyle changes mean that more people are living on their own in apartments rather than houses. They have busy schedules and dealing with all the issues of managing the blocks is a hassle they do not need.

"That – combined with the fact that many of the big national agencies that were appointed by developers to manage blocks when they were completed are not providing the level of service or value for money tenants want – has led to us picking up major work."

BNS Management Services also ensures tenants do not fall foul of the raft of legislative pitfalls that those who look after apartments and flats must comply with.

Andrew said: "There is a change coming up in accounting regulations. Paperwork and contracts must comply with regulations and it can cause a real headache for those who volunteer to oversee the management."
